Visitors to Axminster are often surprised to find a ancient market town that is surrounded by beautiful countryside, but has many of the amenities of a larger town. The town has its own supermarket, sports centre and swimming pool, but also a busy traditional market on Thursdays offering local and organic produce. There are a wide variety of pubs and restaurants in the town and surrounding area, offering great local food in picturesque settings.

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's River Cottage Local Produce Store and Canteen on Axminster's Trinity Square is only five minutes walk from Highfield Bed & Breakfast. The Store is a real alternative to the supermarket, stocking a wide selection of everyday food items such as milk, cheese, eggs, meat, and poultry, as well as a range of books and smallholder supplies. Virtually all of the produce is sourced locally from producers in the South West, accompanied by a small number of high-quality products from other counties in the UK. The Canteen serves meals throughout the day, made from the best local, seasonal produce and is also open three evenings a week, and for Sunday lunch.

River Cottage HQ, Park Farm, based on the Devon-Dorset border, is only a five minute drive from Highfield Bed & Breakfast. It runs a wide range of events and courses, such as Lamb & Mutton In A Day, Pig In A Day and Fish Skills & Cookery.
